چکیده
Research in String Theory was carried out on a very broad front, encompassing mirror symmetry, matrix models, duality, compactifications, the study of string theory in a curved background and its relation to gauge theories, and the interaction of string theory with cosmology. Some progress was made towards quantizing string theory in AdS5 × S in the limit of zero curvature, which is dual to the free limit of N = 4 Super Yang-Mills in four dimensions. A topological matrix model that encodes the scattering amplitudes of noncritical string theory was reformulated as a model with a matrix Liouville potential and open-string tachyon effective actions were investigated. The rolling tachyon of 2-dim. string theory was discussed as a non-commutative soliton in the c=1 matrix model. The solution is non-perturbative in the string coupling and leads to a finite calculation of D0 brane decay. Closed string tachyon condensation was studied in the C/ZN orbifold. An exact supergravity solution describing the decay was found, and the orbifold at large N was shown to be dual to a supergravity system. An Inflationary Model in String Theory was constructed. Mirror symmetry was extended to the heterotic string. A possible generalisation of the Fay trisecant identity to vector bundles was identified.

A connection was established between long wavelength solutions of the classical theory of gravity in AdSd+1 and the Navier Stokes equations in d dimensions. A map (probably one to one) was constructed from the space of long wavelength solutions to Einstein’s equations in AdSd+1 to the solution space of fluid dynamics in d dimensions. These results may prove important in understanding the dynami...

Chiral symmetry breaking in a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio like 4-fermi model, derived from the intersecting brane model of Sakai and Sugimoto in the weak coupling limit, was found to occur only above a critical value of the coupling. Numerical investigations showed, contrary to what had been suggested in the literature, that this feature persists even when the radius of the circle on which the...

In type II string theories, intersecting brane constructions were proposed that contain braneantibrane pairs suspended between 5-branes. Various models with distinct physics were identified: parallel brane-antibrane pairs, adjacent pairs, non-adjacent pairs, and ”Borromean” configurations which break all supersymmetry even though any pair of branes preserves some supersymmetry. Some of the bran...

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, a complete theory of superfluid hydrodynamics for s-wave superfluids was obtained generalizing classic earlier results by Landau, Tiza and Putterman. A new class of small hairy black holes was found in AdS5 x S. The hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled SU(N) Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane was studied at finite temperature and at a nonzero density of R...

A variational formulation of the d-wave superconducting ground state and low-lying excitations in doped Mott insulators was developed building on early resonating valence bond ideas of P. W, Anderson. Analytical approximation schemes were developed to gain further insights into our recent variational Monte Carlo results. The effect of disorder on a two-dimensional Mott insulator was studied and...
